Company profile

The United Illuminating Company (UI) is a New Haven-based regional electric distribution company established in 1899. UI is engaged in the purchase, transmission, distribution and sale of electricity and related services to more than 324,000 residential, commercial and industrial customers in the Greater New Haven and Bridgeport areas.

Before Connecticut’s 1998 deregulation law took effect, UI was a classic electric utility that also owned and managed much of its required electrical generation. Since that time, in accordance with state legislation, the company has divested itself of generation and has focused on addressing the distribution requirements of our customers. Our 1,000 employees pride themselves on system reliability and customer service.

UI doesn't generate electricity, but purchases, transmits, distributes and sells it to approximately 324,000 customers in a service territory covering about 335 square miles. This service area includes the principal cities of Bridgeport and New Haven and their surrounding municipalities: Ansonia, Derby, East Haven, Easton, Fairfield, Hamden, Milford, North Branford, North Haven, Orange, Shelton, Stratford, Trumbull, West Haven and Woodbridge. The population of this area is approximately 736,000, or 21 percent of Connecticut's population.

Recent major company investments to improve system reliability for customers include a major system upgrade and the recently energized Middletown-Norwalk (M-N) transmission line project. The M-N project is the largest post-deregulation effort undertaken by UI and it holds the promise of greatly enhancing our ability to continue providing quality energy services to a growing market.

At UI, we've always been dedicated to the communities we serve. That's why we provide more than electricity. We spearhead conservation efforts, encourage economic growth, assist area businesses and fund important charity organizations through established and often one-of-a-kind programs. With more than 100 years of service, the company is an independently owned and operated utility.
