The United Illuminating Company, was formed in 1899 when the Bridgeport Electric Company merged with the New Haven Electric Company. It is engaged principally in the purchase, transmission, distribution and sale of electricity for residential, commercial and industrial purposes in a service area of about 355 square mile in the southwestern part of the state of Connecticut. The population of this area is approximately 730,000, which represents approximately 21% of the population of the state.
